We’ve put together some simple and essential guidelines to help ensure your trip to India is a pleasant and hassle-free experience. India is a diverse country, with each state having its own unique culture, language, traditions, and cuisine. To make your journey smoother, please read the following recommendations carefully.
Clothing & Accessories
India’s vast geographical size means its climate varies significantly from region to region. Generally, pack cotton clothes, sunglasses, hats, mosquito repellent, comfortable shoes or sandals, moisturizing lotion, and sunblock. If you’re visiting hill stations or the Himalayas, don’t forget woolen clothing. When in public, dress modestly to avoid unwanted attention.
Water
Always carry a bottle of sealed mineral water. Check the seal before purchasing. Avoid drinking water from public taps or roadside stalls. If you wish to drink juice, opt for hygienic restaurants rather than roadside vendors.
Transportation
Buses are the most affordable mode of transportation, followed by auto-rickshaws, cabs, and trains. Always ask for the fare before boarding a rickshaw or cab to prevent disputes. For train journeys, it’s best to book tickets in advance, especially for long distances. Short-distance reserved tickets can also save you from crowded, unreserved compartments. In case of non-availability, consider the “tatkal” quota for last-minute bookings. If traveling by train, carry toilet paper for longer journeys. Most stations have prepaid rickshaw counters to avoid bargaining with drivers.
Smoking
Smoking in public places is strictly prohibited in many parts of India, and violators may face legal consequences.
Currency
You can bring foreign exchange, including currency, traveler’s cheques, and drafts drawn on Indian banks, without any limit. However, if the total exceeds USD 10,000 (or its equivalent), it must be declared to customs upon arrival using a Currency Declaration Form, available at airports or seaports.
Banks & ATMs
Nationalized banks are typically open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, while some private banks operate from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. ATMs are widely available across cities, towns, and even villages.
Credit Cards
Most major hotels, shops, and restaurants accept credit cards.
Drugs
Possession of drugs is a serious criminal offense in India and is punishable by law.
Temple Etiquette
When visiting temples, familiarize yourself with the specific rules and regulations. Non-Hindus may be prohibited from entering certain temples. Footwear is usually not allowed inside temple premises, and appropriate attire is required.
Food
Indian cuisine varies significantly by region. Northern, Southern, and Eastern dishes are all distinct in flavors and preparation styles. Be sure to try the local specialties wherever you travel.
Medicines
Carry any necessary medications, along with prescriptions, to ensure a smooth journey. Make sure you’ve received the recommended vaccinations before traveling.
Electricity
India operates on a 220–240V electric supply. If your devices are not compatible with this voltage, you’ll need a converter. Two- and three-pin plugs are common, and voltage converters are widely available in stores.
Pre-departure Tips
- Pack in advance and keep a printout of your tour plan and hotel confirmations.
- Carry valid ID proofs (driver’s license, voter ID, passport).
- Pack essential medicines, sunscreen, lip balm, and snacks like chocolates and biscuits.
- Bring toiletries, slippers, toilet paper, warm clothes if needed, and comfortable shoes.
- Don’t forget chargers, a power strip, and enough memory cards for your trip.
By following these guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth and enjoyable trip to India.
